Inmate faces battery charge for throwing sandwich at deputy

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An inmate in the Indian River County Jail is facing one more charge after authorities say he assaulted a deputy in the jail during mealtime.

Kyle Edwards, 21, of Vero Beach, who was originally arrested on May 9 on multiple charges including misdemeanor domestic violence-related battery and resisting arrest without violence, has now been charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer, according to his arrest record.

The report states that on Thursday, June 26, Edwards threw a salami sandwich at a deputy while the deputy was giving Edwards his evening meal. The sandwich was from lunch earlier in the day.

Edwards refused to discuss the incident to the investigating deputy, saying only that the deputy had not read him all of his rights. The investigating deputy read the rights from his agency-issued card, according to the report.

Surveillance video supported the deputy’s claim that Edward threw the sandwich, striking him, according to the arrest report.

Edwards is in the Indian River County Jail on the following charges: misdemeanors domestic violence-related battery, trespass after warning and resisting arrest without violence – from May 10; felony battery on a detained person and misdemeanor refusal to provide DNA sample – from May 23; and felony battery on a law enforcement officer – from June 26.

He is being held in lieu of $15,000 bond.
