Bette Frances Buchanan, 87, of Vero Beach, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at her home. She was born in Schenectady, New York. She was of the Catholic faith.
Bette graduated from New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing in 1947 at the head of her class. This entire class became cadets in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps ready to serve if called.
Bette received a Medical Board award for “the best all around nurse”, and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree. She worked with Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research in New York for many years.
While still living in New Rochelle, NY and working at Sloan- Kettering, Bette bought a residence in Vero Beach, which she used seasonally for many years until finally moving to Vero Beach.
After the move, rather than continuing retirement, Bette worked at Indian River Medical Center for another 10 years. Bette was a member of the Registered Nurses Retired in Vero Beach, and enjoyed visiting thrift shops. For a number of years, she volunteered seasonally with the Indian River County Health Department.
