Fellsmere Council considering speed humps near parks

FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere City Council is considering placing speed humps along streets near parks in an attempt to slow drivers down.

City Manager Jason Nunemaker told the Council that the speed humps would be a long-term goal and would not happen immediately.

“Nothing else seems to work 100 percent,” Nunemaker said of the speed humps.

In the short-term, however, he has proposed that the speed limits be decreased on the roads passing by parks.

Currently, most speed limits are 30 mph. Nunemaker is proposing the speeds be dropped to 25 mph or 20 mph – “whatever is defensible.”

Council members have routinely expressed concern about speeders near city parks and the Fellsmere Police Department has done and continues to conduct patrols in those areas for speeding vehicles.

“So many children are out there playing,” Councilman Fernando Herrera said, expressing support for lowering the speed limit and installing speed humps.
