Barbara Lee ‘May’ Freehoffer, 88, Vero Beach

Barbara Lee ‘May’ Freehoffer, 88, of Vero Beach, passed away on June 13, 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband William E. Freehoffer.

Daughter of Anna and Basil M. May who lived at 26 Smith Ave., Niantic, Conn., Freehoffer was born on Aug. 5, 1925, in Mount Vernon, N.Y.

She attended the Niantic and New London High School in Connecticut, and Becker Business College in Worcester, Mass.

Freehoffer will best be remembered in Connecticut for starting the first Red Cross swimming classes at Crescent Beach in Niantic for children in the town of East Lyme.

She left Niantic in 1947 to marry William E. Freehoffer of Pittsfield, Mass. For many years they operated a family business, Liberty Park Cabins and Motel. In 1959, they owned and operated the Liberty Package Store in Hancock until 1975 when they sold it and moved to Middlefield, Mass.

Upon Mr. Freehoffer’s death in 1979, Freehoffer moved to Vero Beach.

Interment will be in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, Great Barrington, Mass.

Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory of Sebastian is entrusted with arrangements.
