Hazel Bantel Smith, 98, Vero Beach

Hazel Bantel Smith, 98, of Vero Beach, passed away on June 10, 2014.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally (Peter Haeffner); son, Lewis L. Smith, III (Cynthia); seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Smith was born June 15, 1915 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a graduate of Summit High School, Summit, N.J., Class of 1933. In April 1937, she married and shared a wonderful life with her beloved husband, Lewis L. Smith, Jr. who predeceased her.

They lived In Garden City, N.Y. for 52 years until they retired and moved to Vero Beach in 1989. She enjoyed entertaining and socializing with friends. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Pink Corner Gift Shop at the Indian River Memorial Hospital earning a 1000 hour service pin.

Smith was also a devoted member of the national sorority of P.E.O. for 50 years. She was a long time congregant at Christ By The Sea United Methodist Church and resided at Regency Park in Vero Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the VNA Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Smith’s life on Monday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at Christ By The Sea United Methodist Church, Vero Beach, with a reception at the church to follow.
