Barbara Ann Allen, 81, Vero Beach

Barbara Ann Allen, 81, of Vero Beach, formerly a resident of the North Carolina mountains, passed away on June 2, 2014.

She is survived by her sisters Grace Johnson, Iris Ledford, and Patricia Barnett.

She is predeceased by her sisters Dolores Hall, Lucille Scorborough, and Betty Roland, and brothers Laurel and Jerry Allen.

She came to live in North Carolina Colony off 65th Avenue in 1971. She transferred to Vero Beach with Southern Bell Phone Company from which she retired after 32 years.

Her favorite work story was her pitching stint for the company softball team in Atlanta, Ga., for many years.

She and her sister Grace Johnson were strong, loving workers in the First Baptist Church of Wabasso. They worked with children and youth. Missionaries at heart, they helped with the organization of Calvary Baptist when it was a mission. They went to Spain and Uruguay on mission trips and after retirement they worked with outreach and the care of the elderly in and around the Wabasso community.

Allen left a great legacy as a favorite aunt with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Only heaven has a record of her influence on their lives and those of many “adoptees.”

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 7, with a Celebration of her life beginning at 2 p.m., all at the First Baptist Church of Wabasso, 4720 86th Street, Sebastian, FL.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Florida Baptist Children’s Home P.O. Box 8190 Lakeland, FL 33902, a ministry that was close to Barbara’s heart.

There will be another celebration of Allen’s life for additional friends and family in her beloved North Carolina mountains at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian. An online guest book is available at www.strunk funeralhome.com.
