Eugene Joseph Callan, 93, of Vero Beach, formerly of Palm City, passed away on May 28, 2014, after a short illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, June Huley Callan; daughter, Christine Callan Thompson (C. Murry Thompson, Jr.); son, Geoffrey Callan (Kay Marie); three granddaughters, Colleen Jones, Caroline Racanelli, and Hannah Callan; a brother, Joseph Callan; a great-grandson, Charles Callan Jones; and various nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Callan.
Callan was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 26, 1920. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in New Jersey and St. Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y. He obtained his law degree from Fordham University.
During World War II, he served in the Navy and was a JAG officer during the Korean War, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He began his career with the First National City Bank (now Citibank) where he was a Vice President. After 30 years, he joined The New York Bank for Savings to become President and CEO and subsequently became President and CEO of Richmond Hill Savings Bank in Floral Park, N.Y. He actively served on the boards of several corporations, including Mutual of America.
After retirement, he and his wife relocated from Garden City, N.Y., to Palm City. He was a member of the University Club in New York City, the Garden City Country Club, and the Garden City Golf Club. He was an avid golfer and loved to play whenever he had the opportunity.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 2, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City, followed by burial in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Palm City. Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm City Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
