INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Vero Beach woman is dead after she steered off the road into a canal off 12th Street and 66th Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Stephanie Gutierrez, 21, of Vero Beach, died in the crash that happened 6:26 a.m. Sunday, according to authorities.
Robert Smith, 25, of Vero Beach, was also in the car and was transported to the Indian River Medical Center with minor injuries.
Neither Gutierrez nor Smith were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to FHP.
Gutierrez steered to the right off the roadway and over corrected to the left sending the vehicle into the canal, authorities said.
Gutierrez’s car struck the south embankment and overturned onto the roof leaving half of the vehicle in the water, according to FHP.
