VERO BEACH — A Vero Beach High School student has been arrested after a school official found alcohol and a gun in his truck, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Jordan Hartwell, 18, of Vero Beach, was arrested at the school Wednesday after Asst. Principal Chris Taylor saw that he had an open container of alcohol in the bed of his truck, according to the report.
Hartwell was then called to his truck in the parking lot.
Hartwell said the open container was his, along with the several unopened bottles of beer located in the water cooler, according to authorities.
Taylor searched Hartwell’s truck and found a Benelli pump shotgun under the seat of the truck. Hartwell said the shotgun was his and he forgot it was under the seat.
Hartwell faces charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds, and possession of alcohol by a person under 21.
He has been released on $1,000 bond.
