Edgar Vernon Phillips, 64, of Fellsmere, passed away on May 29, 2014.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Sandy, who he was married to for 35 years; sister, Mary Phillip Jackman (Charles); and his nieces and nephews, Joseph Phillips, John E. Phillips, Lisa Jackman Rodriguez, Jeanne Marie Phillips, Michael Jackman, Jennifer Jackman Begley, Mandy Fore, Chessie Fore, and Brandon Fore.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Vernon and Mary Phillips and his brother John W. Phillips.
He was born in Miami and lived on the Treasure Coast for most of his life. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he was awarded the citation of Electronic Technician Second Class and served on the U.S.S. Tullibee, SSN597. He also received the Good Conduct Award for Fidelity, Zeal and Obedience as an Electronics Technician Radar Second Class (SS).
After his years in the Navy, he attended both Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
He co-owned Phillips Construction Company alongside his brother, John William Phillips. They built hundreds of homes in the 1980’s and 90’s along the Treasure Coast. Later in his career he worked as a foreman for Hedley Construction.
He was a little league coach and umpire in Port St. Lucie throughout the 1990’s. He was a man of gentleness, caring and love. He was a quiet man who treated his friends and family with love and respect. He will be greatly missed.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Seawinds Funeral Home, 735 S. Fleming Street, Sebastian with a memorial service to begin at 11 a.m., Deacon John Dunlop presiding. Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #189. Inurnment will take place at a later date at South Florida National Cemetery.
