William C. Hepfer, 78, Vero Beach

William C. Hepfer, 78, of Vero Beach, passed away after a short but fierce battle with cancer on May 18, 2014.

He is survived by Janice, his loving wife of forty six years; his two children, Lynn H. (Kris) Smith, and Mark R. (Jennifer) Hepfer; and his four grandchildren Josh, Logan, Katie, and Alan; as well as brothers, sisters and countless friends.

Hepfer was born to the late Harold and Anne Hepfer on March 13, 1936 in Philadelphia , Penn. He began his twenty years of service for the United States Air Force in August of 1954. While he traveled the world during his military service, his favorite station overseas was in Japan, where he met and married the love of his life Janice Brenner Hepfer.

He retired from the United States Air Force in August of 1974 after twenty dedicated years, with his final station being at the Pentagon. Later in 1974, Hepfer, his wife, and their two children moved to Vero Beach. It is there where he began his second career of twenty years with the Vero Beach Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant.

Hepfer was known to be professional, compassionate and honest with all those he came in contact with. No one was ever a “stranger” for long after meeting him. He was a devoted husband, partner, father, and friend, with his family being the most important part of his life. He was an avid golfer, gardening partner, and lover of all things outdoors.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Island Park on May 31, at 2 p.m., followed immediately by a celebration of Hepfer’s life at the Bethel Creek House.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA Indian River Hospice house. Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach. A guest book is available at www.strunkfuneralhome.com.
