Indian River’s Teacher of Year named State Finalist

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — What started out as a day of celebration at Citrus Elementary School for their involvement in this year’s March of Dimes events and the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart, turned out to have another reason for celebration. Florida’s Commissioner of Education, Pam Stewart, made a special trip to Citrus Elementary School to announce that Lyndsey Matheny, Indian River County’s 2015 Teacher of the Year, is one of five State Finalists.

Dr. Fran Adams, Superintendent, joined Commissioner Stewart and Beverly Shea, General Manager & Vice President of the Vero Beach Macy’s store for the celebration.

“It is significant for us as a School District to have a Finalist in the State Teacher of the Year competition,” said Dr. Adams. “Having such an affirmation is something to be proud of and we celebrate Mrs. Matheny’s selection for this great honor. Indian River County School District has had at least three Florida Teachers of the Year and a number of Finalists in the State competition, so we are extremely proud!”

Citrus Elementary Principal Jon Teske said, “Mrs. Matheny is a top-notch teacher and team player. It is no surprise that she is a State Finalist.”

Mrs. Matheny voiced her happiness that “the journey is not over” for her as a Teacher of the Year.

On July 10, the 2015 Macy’s/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year will be announced at a dinner event at the Hard Rock Café in Orlando.
