INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — County Commissioners unanimously agreed to enter into a licensing agreement with Wal-Mart on State Road 60 in Vero Beach in order to place a bus shelter at the existing bus stop.
The Wal-Mart is located along GoLine bus route 2. Route 2 provides service along SR 60 between the Main Transit Hub near the airport, and the Indian River Mall. More than 186,000 passengers were transported along this commercial route last year, according to official documentation.
The Wal-Mart bus stop is one of the busiest along the route. Because of limited public access space, the County will enter an agreement with Wal-Mart to construct a shelter mostly on Wal-Mart’s private property.
According to recommendation, the agreement between Wal-Mart and the County will cover a three-year period and can be renewed once the three years have passed.
“This is good news to report,” said Commissioner Tim Zorc. Zorc said he wanted to continue discussion with Wal-Mart about solving a parking problem near the bus station.
“Right now we have people that shop, take the carts out to the front, turn their carts over and sit on them. So we’re addressing that,” Zorc said. He added there needed to be easy access to parking lot space available near the bus station to make it easier for shoppers to return their carts.
Zorc said he wanted to discuss a sloping curb for people on scooters or electric wheelchairs to access the bus shelter area, and a cart collection area in the parking lot near the stop.
Community Development Director, Stan Boling, said that all of Zorc’s requests were reasonable and well within the bounds of codes and regulations.
Discussion between the County and Wal-Mart is expected to continue over the points Zorc spoke about, but the licensing agreement will move forward for the shelter in the meantime.
