Indian River County Bar Association recognizes ‘Law Week’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Indian River County Bar Association is pleased to announce Law Week, which will take place April 28 through May 2. Law Week is held every year in conjunction with Law Day, an annual event set aside to commemorate the importance of the Rule of Law in American society.

The theme for this year’s Law Week is American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters. The theme provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of voting rights and the role that equal access to the ballot box plays in ensuring our freedom.

Each year the Indian River County Bar Association hosts a variety of activities to celebrate Law Week and partners with the Indian River County Lawyers to sponsor “Attorneys and Judges in the Classroom.”

Attorneys and judges give presentations in all 5th grade classrooms, 8th grade Social Studies classes, 11th grade US/American History classes, and 12th grade Government classes at both public and private schools throughout the county.

New this year is participation by the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office. The Elections Office has joined forces with the Indian River County Lawyers Auxiliary to provide high school students with the opportunity to register to vote. Elections staff will host voter registration drives during lunch at each high school.

“Voting is the foundation of a free society, and we hope to encourage students to play an active role in society by participating in the electoral process,” said Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan.

In addition to working in the schools, the Young Lawyers Division will offer two “Ask-a-Lawyer” sessions, one in-person at the Indian River County Main Library and a televised version on the public access channel.

Last year, 46 attorneys and 4 judges participated to serve 2,500 students in 97 classrooms at 23 schools throughout the county. The Bar Association and Lawyers Auxiliary anticipate having an even greater impact this year.
