Community donates $29k to 4 schools

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Four Indian River County Schools have or will receive a total of more than $29,600 in donations from the community.

The School Board unanimously approved the donations during Tuesday’s meeting.

Beachland, Pelican Island, Sebastian and Highlands elementary schools are the beneficiaries of various donors and organizations.

The Beachland Elementary School PTA has donated $25,000 to purchase laptops for the students’ classroom and online testing uses. The group also donated $1,126.80 for the Follett Sciencesaurus program to complete the grade level curriculum for grades 2 through 5.

Pelican Island Elementary received $1,000 from a donor identified as Linda Wanser. The funds will be used to provide snacks to those students participating in FCAT testing.

Fellow donor David Gerson gave Sebastian Elementary $1,000 to be used for the school’s Academic Games sponsorship.

Second grade students at Highlands Elementary will be able to participate in the school’s annual swimming/water safety program thanks, in part, to a $1,544 donation from the Orchid Island Rotary Club.
