Humane Society’s pet food bank running low

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Humane Society Pet Food Bank is running low and is need of community donations.

The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is requesting donations of pet food to help replenish its community Pet Food Bank. In addition to helping pet parents who have signed up with the Humane Society, the Pet Food Bank aids pet-lovers who obtain assistance through local agencies including Meals on Wheels, Harvest Food Outreach and The Source.

“There are many people in our community who are facing financial hardship,” Humane Society Director of Animal Care Maria Ramirez said.

“Some have health issues while others may have lost their jobs. We often see how people who are struggling financially will ignore their own needs in order to feed their animals, and it shouldn’t come to that,” she said.

All dog, cat and small animal food items will be gratefully accepted. Contributions of opened bags of dry food will also be taken since all food is checked and re-packaged prior to distribution.

Blankets and towels are also needed.

Donations can be made at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach, the Humane Society thrift shop in Vero Beach, located at 4445 20th St. or the Humane Society thrift shop in Sebastian, located at 441 Sebastian Blvd. (County Road 512).

County residents facing financial difficulties who are in need of pet food should apply for assistance at the Humane Society. For more information call (772) 388-3331 ext. 29.
