Former Sebastian hospital CEO takes post at Vero hospital

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The former chief executive officer at Sebastian River Medical Center who abruptly resigned earlier this month has taken a post at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.

Indian River Medical Center has named Steven Salyer as its Chief Operating Officer effective April 21, 2014, officials announced Thursday. As Chief Operating Officer, his day-to-day focus will be overseeing hospital operations to ensure the delivery of excellent patient care with engaged employees and medical staff.

“Steven is an experienced executive who brings the passion and commitment needed to help guide IRMC into its next chapter,” said Jeffrey L. Susi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Indian River Medical Center. “He shares our vision to improve the health and well-being of this community, and his extensive background in operations will serve our hospital and our community well.”

Salyer brings extensive experience in all areas of hospital operations. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian, where he led the 154-bed medical center since 2012. During his tenure at Sebastian River, Salyer improved patient and physician satisfaction, established a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery and led the facility to be first among the company’s 71 hospitals in volume and revenue growth.

“I am excited to be joining a strong leadership team at such a high-quality hospital that is working to become even better by embracing the challenges of today’s healthcare environment,” said Salyer. “Indian River is an impressive organization with robust services and a great vision for growth to meet the needs of our community. I look forward to working closely with IRMC’s employees and physicians and continue fulfilling my personal mission of providing the best healthcare possible to this community for generations to come.”

The hiring of a Chief Operating Officer for Indian River was a process involving a national search for talent and the input of representatives from the IRMC Board of Directors, the Indian River County Hospital District Board of Trustees, the IRMC management team, and IRMC medical staff leadership.

Salyer has held several executive positions in community hospitals across the Southeast. Prior to his role with Sebastian River, Salyer served as Chief Executive Officer for Starke Regional Medical Center in Starke, Fla., and Chief Operations Officer for Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Before beginning his career in healthcare, Salyer served in the United States Marine Corps for six years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University and his MBA from New York Institute of Technology.
