Edith Kalish, 98, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 31, 2014.
She is survived by her children Suzanne Keegan, and Dr. Keith Kalish; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Martin Kalish, and Rita Bergman McLaughlin, and her sisters Irene and Millie.
Kalish was born in New York City before women had the right to vote and there were still horse and buggies. She lived in numerous states such as Iowa, Pennsylvania and Michigan before moving to Florida in 1985.
She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Before retirement from the Detroit School Systems as a Social Worker, she also was a field instructor for the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan.
Since retirement, Kalish pursued her passion for painting and writing of poetry and short stories. She was a member of the AAUW and Pen Women of Indian River County. Some of her writings were published through the organization.
Kalish has sold many of her colorful paintings throughout the community. She never stopped pursuing her passion for reading, self education, politics and counseling others.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Holiday Inn Oceanside 3384 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach on Saturday, May 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.
