Vero Beach High Symphony Band cleared for Atlanta competition

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County School Board agreed Tuesday night to allow the Vero Beach High School Symphony Band to travel to Atlanta for competition later this month.

The students would be out of school April 24 and 25 and return to the classroom on April 28. They will be performing in the Fiesta-Val Atlanta Band Competition, which is expected to “serve as viable educational ‘make‐up’ for the canceled South Carolina trip, according to School Board records.

Funds raised for the South Carolina trip will be applied to the Atlanta trip. The South Carolina trip was cancelled due to severe weather conditions.

“We are requesting this travel and performance opportunity for these students as they had worked for several months preparing the music and raising funds for their trip,” wrote Band Director Jim Sammons in his request letter to the high school’s principal.
