INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Now in its fourth year, the Sunday Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach consists primarily of undesignated plate offerings from each Sunday service. This year, the Fund is financially supporting six predominantly local organizations and projects that provide service, education, advocacy or witness consistent with UU principles and values.
Recently, committee member Suzy Bromwell presented a Sunday Fund check for $659 to Mary Silva, executive director of Literacy Services of Indian River County.
Current Fund recipients are Literacy Services, Feed the Lambs, Homeless Family Center, Guardians for New Futures, Gifford Youth Orchestra and Every Dream Has a Price.
The contributions to these groups for the first six months of the UUFVB fiscal year totaled $5,199.
Community outreach has long been an integral aspect of congregational life at the Fellowship. As a tangible expression of the church’s mission to “seek justice for all,” the Sunday Fund was established in October 2010. In its first three years of existence, Fund contributions totaled more than $26,000. The Sunday Fund Committee consists of Bromwell, Art Compton, Jack Stiefel, Donna Brewer and Beth Pierson.
Literacy Services of Indian River County provides trained, volunteer tutors to instruct adults one-on-one in basic reading and writing skills. They also provide tutors for English to speakers of other languages. The lessons are free, private and confidential.
The UU Fellowship, offering a liberal religion on the Treasure Coast, has easy parking and is handicap accessible. It is located at 1590 27th Avenue on the southeast corner of 27th Avenue and 16th Street.
