County man breaks in, chases victim and fires shots

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An Indian River County man has been arrested for attempted felony murder and discharging a firearm in public, among other charges after an incident on 23rd Place SW, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven Hammock, 33, was arrested March 22 around 1:30 a.m. in the 600 block of 23rd Place SW, according to the report. Along with attempted murder and firing a gun, Hammock faces charges of aggravated assault, violation of an injunction, burglary, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Hammock started the altercation by punching out a bedroom window, according to authorities. Hammock is the ex-husband of the victim and he was there demanding to see his daughter who was sleeping.

After the window was smashed, the victim then ran to the front door and attempted to prevent Hammock from entering the home.

Hammock appeared to be in a drunken rage, according to what the victim told investigators. He made demands to take away the victim’s cell phone. He then removed a small revolver from his pants pocket and pointed it in the air, according to authorities.

Hammock then pointed the gun in the victim’s face while saying, “Give me your f*****g cell phone!”

“I’ll shoot you and I’m not leaving alive,” said Hammock, according to the report.

He then took the phone and smashed it on the ground. The victim was able to run back in her home and get her daughter’s phone.

The victim attempted to lock the door when Hammock kicked the entire door down and off the frame. After the victim struggled with Hammock she managed to get away and ran around him to the roadway yelling for help from neighbors. Hammock chased her into the roadway.

She then heard four consecutive gun shots from behind her.

Responding deputies found Hammock standing in the road covered in blood and appeared distraught and confused. He was transported to Lawnwood Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities recovered a small revolver lying in the front yard of the home which contained four spent casings and one live round.

The victim said she thought she was going to die when Hammock pointed the firearm at her. She was not struck by any bullets.
