Dive team searches for stolen handgun

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Following a tip the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office received, Indian River Fire Rescue’s dive team turned a training day into a search for a stolen firearm, according to authorities.

“I figured they were going to be diving today anyway, so why not let them dive for something that was recoverable,” said Sgt. Mike Pierce.

Divers were searching for a handgun that was stolen during a residential burglary in 2013, according to Sgt. Pierce.

“I’m assuming the guy can throw better than 30 yards,” said Fire Rescues Lt. Kevin Slade before Ray Jones entered the water.

On the banks, Sgt. Pierce stood with a rifle watching for alligators.

“You never know when they’re hiding up in the bushes,” said Sgt. Pierce.

The team searched a pond, which was a pit for fill dirt, near the Indian River County Fairgrounds.

“If you find anything more suspicious bring it up,” asked Sgt. Pierce.
