FELLSMERE — The City of Fellsmere is working with the Marian Fell Library staff to sort and catalog items that the library is no longer in need of. The items the library doesn’t need will be sold to the public.
“We’re not going to strip the building bare,” City Manager Jason Nunemaker told the Fellsmere City Council, despite what rumors might be circulating.
Connie Ward, who has run programs at the library for 16 years, is preparing for renovations at the library and needs to clear space.
Non-historical books, chairs and aging computers are expected to be on the list of items to be sold.
Ward is expected to hold on to historical books, first editions, significant and historical documents and the like.
“She’s meticulous,” Nunemaker said of Ward. “She has lists.”
Before the items can be sold as “surplus,” the city has to have a listing and advertise it, according to City Attorney Warren Dill.
Nunemaker said after the recent City Council meeting he would expect the Council’s approval of the surplus list at the next meeting and a sale to take place perhaps on Fellsmere Day – April 5.
Mayor Susan Adams requested that the surplus books be donated to the Indian River County library system.
“I hate to throw away books,” she said.
Vice Mayor Joel Tyson, too, made a request that the Indian River County Historical Society be allowed to review the items that have been earmarked for removal to ensure that nothing is removed that shouldn’t be.
