Sebastian hospital CEO resigns

SEBASTIAN — In a move that completely blindsided the Sebastian River Medical Center’s Board of Trustees and staff, CEO Steven Salyer announced over the weekend he was resigning his position effective immediately.

He cited personal reasons for the departure.

Board of Trustees Chairman Frank Sherako “regretfully” confirmed the news and agreed that the seemingly sudden decision “absolutely took us all by surprise. I’m disappointed,” he said, adding that he nevertheless respects Salyer’s decision.

As to rumors Salyer might be considering a position with Indian River Medical Center, which itself has had recent leadership issues, Sherako said he was not aware of that or any other specific reason for Salyer’s sudden resignation.

Salyer took the reins at SRMC in April 2012, significantly younger, at 36, than most individuals in similar positions. Prior to moving to Sebastian with his wife and three daughters, he served for a year and a half as CEO of Shands Medical Center, in Starke, Fla.
