Sebastian adopts stronger fertilizer ordinance

SEBASTIAN — A fertilizer ordinance expanding upon the previously adopted ordinance was approved on Wednesday evening at the Sebastian City Council meeting with a vote 5-0.

The topic of the fertilizer ordinance has been heavily discussed and debated by City Council members, the first ordinance passing in late February with a vote of 3-2.

Sebastian’s previous fertilizer ordinance was adopted after the state’s model, a model that has since been amended with stronger rules and regulations. Sebastian now joins the other cities in Indian River County that have already approved stronger ordinances.

The ordinance will not prohibit the application of “certain fertilizer” between June 2 and Sept. 30, and will regulate fertilizer content and application rates.

Councilwoman Andrea Coy, a vocal advocate for the stronger ordinance said, “I’m so happy I could cry,” once the vote was finally passed.
