Gifford man arrested for firing at ‘robber’

GIFFORD — A Gifford man was arrested Thursday, around 5 a.m., and faces charges of improper exhibition of and discharge of a firearm, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

When authorities responded to a report of shots fired, they found Quentin Gonzalez, 18, standing in the front yard of a home in the 4300 block of 27th Avenue, according to the affidavit. When an officer commanded Gonzalez to put his hands up, he raised a black .22 caliber rifle in the air with the barrel facing the deputy’s direction.

After Gonzalez was read his rights he said that someone in a white Honda tried to rob him and that he fired one round while in public at the suspected vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Gonzalez was also noted in the report to be heavily intoxicated. Authorities noted he was very paranoid and told them someone put unknown drugs in his drink.

“It was only one shot with a .22,” mumbled Gonzalez. “(It) was only a warning shot.”

The rifle was recovered by authorities and was found jammed, according to the report. The location and disposition of the alleged “robber” is not contained in the police report.
