SEBASTIAN — I was blown away by a thank-you note I received from Wild Willie, a 10-month-old Yorkshire terrier who lives in Sebastian with his human mom, Anne VanZandt, and his grandma Millie.
Willie told me he had read the article I wrote about 10-month-old Katie the shichi in the Jan. 16 issue.
Here’s the kicker: Wild Willlie and Katie have met and now are in love!
“A few weeks after your article was published, my mom took me for a walk,” Willie said. “Lo and behold, there was beautiful Katie riding in the basket of her human’s bicycle. Our eyes met and it was all over. Both Katie and I were smitten with each other. Katie was a bit shy at first, but she did manage to ask me if I’d like to come over sometime for a playdate in her fenced-in back yard.”
“Oh boy, would I,” I responded. “Mom said it was OK since Katie and her humans only live around the block. Mom also told me Katie was only a couple of weeks older than me. That meant Katie and I will be celebrating our first birthdays very soon.”
“Pawtasic,” I said. “So how did your first date go?”
“Well, Mom finally walked me over to Katie’s backyard, Katie looked even more beautiful than when I’d first met her. We had the best time ever, Bonzo,” Willie said. “Katie liked it when I chased her. We also liked rolling around and tussling with each other. Katie is in phenomenal shape so I tuckered out before she did.”
“While it’s cool to have a girlfriend, Willie, do you hang out with any doggy dudes?” I asked.
“Of course I do, Bonzo,” Willie said. “One of my buddies is a Yorkie mix named Rocky. He’s fun but he’s older so he doesn’t like to play for as long as I’d like. Then there’s my next door neighbor Tank, the miniature pincher. Between you and me, Bonzo, Tank could lose a few. And he’s older than I am as well.
“But here’s the interesting thing about hanging out with Tank,” Willie told me excitedly. “Tank’s backyard corner connects to Katie’s backyard. So, Katie and I get to rendezvous whenever I visit with Tank. It works out perfectly. I don’t annoy Tank and I get to spend even more time with my sweetie.
“Unfortunately though, Mom, Grandma and I are snowbirds so we’ll be going back up north soon.”
“But surely Katie will wait for your return, Willie,” I said.
“I hope so, Bonzo,” Willie said. “I feel like we’re a little bit like Romeo and Juliet. Katie and I hate to say goodbye. I hope she will be waiting in her window when I return in the fall.”
“I’ll bet she will,” I said.
“Bonz, I don’t know if you have made other dog matches but you sure did a pawesome job with this one.” Willie said. “I can’t thank you enough.”
“It was my pleasure, Willie,” I said.
Till next time,
The Bonz
