Roy Hunt, 67, Vero Beach

Roy Hunt, 67, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 8, 2014.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Lorraine; daughter Keri Elwell (Brian); son Ryan (Gloria); brothers Halsey (Joanne), Gary (Eileen), and Jeffrey (Marie); six grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father Halsey and his mother Grace.

Hunt grew up in Pompton Lakes, N.J. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and an Acolyte at Christ Church, graduating from Pompton Lakes High School in 1964.

He was an accomplished athlete, playing in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn. When he reached High School he excelled in football and track as team captain. He still holds the Javelin record (185’3″) at PLHS he set in 1963, 51 years ago. As a standout running back for the legendary coach Benson, with sweetheart Lorraine as his cheerleader, he earned a football scholarship to Furman University, that was cut short by a knee injury, at the hands of Miami Dolphin Jim Kiick.

He and Lorraine were also king and queen of their Junior Prom.

Hunt attended Bloomfield College majoring in Psychology where he was a proud member of Delta Phi Chi fraternity.

He then decided to serve his country, enlisting in the Navy and quickly rising to the rank of Active Chief Petty Officer. After leaving the Navy, he started working in his lifelong career, textile manufacturing sales initially with Manhattan Shirt Company, then Benham and Deisher, the Miller Group, and Cressona Knit Mills as Chairman and CEO of the Hunt Group.

He manufactured and printed T-shirts for Disney, Ocean Pacific, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and many other rock groups as well as the entire Black Dog T-shirt program from Martha’s Vineyard.

Hunt added his professionalism to everything he did and that drive fueled his tremendous success in business. While he lived in Pompton Plains and summered for many years in Toms River, N.J., he loved Florida and 20 years ago bought a beautiful home on the Indian River where he fished every evening.

He had a lot of loves including his 32 Roadster, his 62 Corvette, his other cars, and boats, but none more important than his 6th grade love, Lorraine whom he managed to convince to become his wife.

A memorial gathering and life celebration will be held on March 15 at 2 p.m. at his family home in Seagrove West, and in New Jersey in the spring.
