Matthias Mathewson, 79, of Sebastian, passed away on Feb. 24, 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Maureen Mathewson; daughter, Karen Whelan (John); son, Steven Mathewson (Karin); grandaughter, Kelsey Whelan; grandson, Cory Whelan; and brothers, Bernard Mathewson, Skuli Mathewson, Edward Mathewson, and Ronald Mathewson.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Mathewson, and sister, Diane Ellis.
Mathewson was an Army veteran. He was a Missile Systems Instructor during the Korean War. He received his Master’s Degree from State University of New York, Oswego, N.Y., and taught Electronics and Industrial Arts at Columbia High School, Maplewood, N.J., for 33 years.
Mathewson was an avid sailor. He was an active member of the Vero Beach Power Squadron where he taught Boating Safety and Celestial Navigation.
He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, in Sebastian. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1301 Sebastian Boulevard, Sebastian, FL 32958 in memory of Matthias Mathewson.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 1, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sebastian with Pastor Karen Leedahl, officiating. Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Sebastian. A guest book is available at www.strunkfuneralhome.com
