George J. Carmichael Jr., 100, Vero Beach

George J. Carmichael Jr., 100, of Vero Beach, passed away on Feb. 21, 2014 after a brief illness.

He is survived by his sons, George J. Carmichael, III, and James Carmichael; and five grandchildren, Timothy, Christie, James, George and Robert.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Beverly Carmichael, and his daughter, Gail Carmichael.

He was born Jan. 30, 1914 in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he attended Erasmus Hall High School. He was the last surviving alumnus of the Colgate University class of 1935, and he served as an officer in the US Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1945.

Carmichael had a very successful 40 year career with AT&T and the New York Telephone Co., becoming VP of Public Relations in 1963, and retiring as VP of Personnel in 1978.

He lived primarily in the metropolitan New York area, including Manhasset, N.Y., where he was president of the school board from 1964 to 1971. He retired to Vero Beach where he lived from 1978 to 2014.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, as well as a long-time member of the Vero Beach Country Club, Vero Beach Yacht Club and Sons of the American Revolution.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at the Strunk Funeral Home, in Vero Beach. A Funeral Service will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at Strunk Funeral Home with Dr. George L. Earnshaw, First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach officiating.
