VERO BEACH — An ordinance increasing the City of Vero Beach Utilities Commission from five appointed members to seven passed in a 3-2 vote at the City Council meeting on Tuesday evening.
Prior to the ordinance, each member of City Council appointed one member to the utilities committee.
The ammendment came at the request of Vice Mayor Jay Kramer, so that he could appoint a member to the committee as well.
Concerns that the ammendment would reduce the representation of utility customers who live outside of city limits were raised.
The Indian River Shores community will still be represented by one member.
Councilwoman Pilar Turner questioned how the ordinance would serve to promote and improve efficiency.
Turner requested two “whereas” clauses to be struck from the ordinance on the basis that her questions about stremalining and efficiency could not be answered.
Turner and Councilman Craig Fletcher both voted against the ordinance as presented, but the ordinance still passed 3-2.
