“Love Life Walk Appreciation Week” declared in Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — This week has been declared by the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners as “Love Life Walk Appreciation Week.”

The declaration was made in recognition of Indian River County resident Steve Fugate, who has spent the last 14 years, walking back and forth through the country, carrying a banner posted high above his head that reads, “Love Life.”

Fugate launched his most current journey from Vero Beach on March 23, 2013, and has since walked over 30,000 miles, crossing 21 states. His intention is to walk the 48, mainland states in a zigzag pattern, a trip that could take up to three years, and include crossing the country several times.

But this is not Fugate’s first rodeo, as he and his sign have made four ambitious cross-country treks already.

His “Love Life” message was born out of tragedy after the death of both of his children. His son, Stevie, committed suicide when he was only 26 years old. His daughter, Michele, died of an accidental drug overdose six years later.

Instead of succumbing to tragedy, Fugate has dedicated his life to spreading a message of love and hope to all he meets as he treks across the United States.

He has been featured on numerous national news media outlets including the telling of his story on National Public Radio. Additionally, he has acquired a widespread social media following on Facebook, Twitter, and on his blog, www.trailtherapy.com.

In honor of Fugate’s efforts, the Board has publicaly invited Indian River County residents to a “Love Life Walk” event set to take place at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the east side of Barber Bridge.
