Sebastian Council to seek state money for lagoon monitoring

SEBASTIAN — Following an informative and well-attended Lagoon Workshop the previous week, the Sebastian City Council at its regular meeting Jan. 22 approved a resolution requesting state funding for Indian River Lagoon Research.

The request will be sent to Gov. Rick Scott, who has recently approved millions of dollars for other Florida water-related projects, including the $130 million for Everglades restoration and $55 million to preserve and protect Florida’s springs.

The resolution will urge the Florida Legislature and Gov. Scott “to recognize the extreme importance of the fragile Indian River Lagoon, a designated estuary of national significance, and requesting that the state recognize the need for immediate action to address the health of the lagoon and provide adequate funding for testing to find the resources of pollution and create methods to restore the lagoon’s health and to prevent any further loss of marine life and the demise of one of Florida’s most treasured ecosystems.”
