INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Gifford community activist Althea McKenzie announced at today’s County Commission meeting she is running for the District 2 commission seat in this year’s election.
McKenzie, who ran for School Board in 2010, said she has lived in the county since 2004 and been involved in a number of civic and community activities.
After the meeting, she said she hopes to work for economic development that benefits lower-income and middle-income families in Indian River County, advocating for equitable government infrastructure and education funding.
“I will be an open honest voice advocating for increased opportunities for all members of our community,” she said.
McKenzie said she filed the necessary paperwork on Friday with the Supervisor of Elections.
District 2 is represented by Commissioner Joe Flescher, who is up for re-election in November.
