INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Three years and Umpire School at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach is still going strong as 91 students learn to officiate games.
This is the third year for the school. The inaugural year had 35 students and have nearly tripled their attendance.
During the course, umpires in training will learn the two-man system.
“They will know it inside and out,” said Matt Czajak, MiLB instructor.
Material taught will include field mechanics and the rule book.
The course began Jan. 5 and will wrap up Feb. 2. The Professional Baseball Umpire Corp (PBUC) puts on the clinic. Students include one female student, from 30 states, as well as Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Japan, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
The event is opening to the public.
“These guys, once their done, with this, will be ready to umpire lower level minor league ball, college ball, high school ball. They’ll be ready to roll,” said Czajak.
