VERO BEACH — The Academy for the Performing Arts, Vero’s nonprofit music school, has announced the addition of Joyce Deschamps to its faculty.
Deschamps will be teaching piano: jazz, classical, and improvisation.
A newcomer to Vero Beach, Deschamps comes to Vero Beach from Connecticut, where she was both a teacher and performer. She studied piano at the Hartt School of Music, the University of Connecticut, and at The George Washington University, as well as with private instructors.
She began playing in public and teaching when she was in college in Washington, D.C.
As many as 40 students per year have learned the basics of music, as well as how to improvise, use music charts, and chords.
“Music is a gift one gives to oneself; a gift of expression, relaxation, stress relief, and beauty,” Deschamps said of her philosophy. “If the musician understands the meaning of the song, and plays it with that idea foremost in his mind, then the listeners will also understand and hear more than a pleasant tune.”
Deschamps enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities. One of her current students, a beginner, just celebrated his 83rd birthday.
The Academy for the Performing Arts offers instruction by professional faculty for beginning to advanced students of all ages in piano, jazz piano, guitar, brass/woods, and percussion including timpani and marimba.
Performing opportunities are available for all students.
Registration is now open for new students for the 2014 Spring Semester. Weekly instrumental and voice lessons begin Jan. 13 and run through May 23 and are available in private or as a group.
