INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County School Tuesday evening closed out the district’s $1 million locker room renovation project at Sebastian River Middle School.
The School Board approved releasing its final payment to Summit Construction of Vero Beach LLC. That final payment was in the amount of $44,486.
The project was originally budgeted for $1.067 million but actually came in $1,000 less.
“It was quite a project,” Schools Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams said, explaining that the locker rooms for both boys and girls were in a state of disrepair.
School Board member Claudia Jimenez reminded the audience that the project was paid for using the capital improvement fund – not funds that could have been used for salaries or in classrooms.
“This was about safety,” Jimenez said. “We talk about the ‘whole student’ and athletics is part of that.”
School Board member Dale Simchick expressed a similar opinion, saying that involvement in sports and music – statistically speaking – help keep students out of trouble.
