George Newcombe Chandler II, 75, Vero Beach

George Newcombe Chandler II, 75, of Vero Beach, died at his residence on Dec. 28, 2013.

Chandler was born Sept. 19, 1938, to Elizabeth C. and John R. Chandler in Cleveland, Ohio where he resided for most of his life.

Chandler attended Hawken and Choate Schools, followed by Washington and Lee University.

After serving in the army, Chandler joined Pickands Mather & Co., Cleveland, Ohio, where he became president in 1987.

Following Pickands Mather’s acquisition by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., from 1990-2000, he traveled the globe as president of Pickands Mather & Co. International and senior vice president of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., having commercial and operating responsibility for the Savage River Mines in Tasmania, Australia until his retirement in 2000.

He was a member of the board of directors for Sky Financial Group in Bowling Green, Ohio until 2007.

He was married to Mary Hollington in 1960 and had four children prior to her death in 2000.

In 2004, he married Sara Brackman Taylor and moved to Vero Beach.

Chandler was active in civic and educational organizations, including Hattie Larlham where he was president and emeritus trustee.

He was on the board and past president of Lochland School in Geneva, N.Y.

He was active in the Cleveland Council on Foreign Relations and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs.

He served as class agent at Choate School for over 50 years and supported as an active fundraiser several other local institutions in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was past president of the Union Club of Cleveland, Tavern Club and the Kirtland Country Club all in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was director of the Riomar Golf Club in Vero Beach, where he was chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, overseeing the recent construction of the beach club and maintenance facilities.

He was an ardent duck hunter at the Winous Point Shooting Club in Port Clinton, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife Sara Chandler; his daughters Elizabeth K. Chandler (Carl Greppin), of Cleveland, Ohio, Margaret C. Martin (Byron), of Wolfeboro, N. H.; his sons George N. Chandler, III, of Geneva, N.Y.,, Christopher C. H. Chandler (Vanessa), of Palm Beach Gardens; his stepdaughters Maggie Taylor (Jerry Uelsmann), of Gainesville, Sara Rich (Tony), of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother John Rust Chandler of Lakeville, Conn.; his sister Laura Marshall of Easton, Md; and his grandchildren Christopher, Katherine, Charles, Kaitlyn, Chase, Mary, Christopher, Jackson and Alexandra.

The family will receive family and friends at a cocktail gathering and celebration of his life at the Riomar Country Club in Vero Beach, on Jan. 4, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. and at the Kirtland Country Club, Willoughby, Ohio on Jan. 11, 2014 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
