Pelican Island Refuge celebrating pioneers

SEBASTIAN — Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge is pleased to announce its inaugural Pioneer Festival celebrating the anniversary of Paul Kroegel’s 150th birthday.

Join us for the authentic sights, sounds, aromas, and flavors of the pioneer days on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fisherman’s Landing, next to Crab-E-Bill’s Seafood Market on Indian River Dr. in historic downtown Sebastian.

This special event is free and open to the public.

Taste free samples of traditional pioneer foods such as swamp cabbage, heart of palm salad, oysters, clams, honey, sun brewed iced tea, and more.

Duck decoy carvers, bee keepers, wool spinners, boat builders, and many more will be demonstrating the day in the life of a traditional pioneer. There will be bird programs, scavenger hunts, prizes, and much more.

Want to take a quick break from all the excitement? Sit down and relax inside Crab-E-Bill’s Seafood Market for a movie promo on the making of America’s Gatekeeper: The Story of Paul Kroegel. Afterwards, join us for story time with Paul Kroegel’s granddaughter.

Still can’t get enough? Grab a net and cast out into the most biologically diverse estuary in all of North America to discover some natural treasures. Don’t miss out on this unique and memorable experience.
