TREASURE COAST — In the spirit of eco-friendly holiday celebrations, Waste Management of the Treasure Coast invites its community to share their green seasonal décor via social media.
The company is encouraging folks who have created, purchased, or spotted an environmentally inspired holiday decoration to share a photo through Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s as compared to any other time of the year, amounting to an extra 6 million tons during the entire holiday season.
“Now is the ideal time to cut down on waste and to reuse things you’d usually throw away. As you take out your past years’ holiday boxes, think about reusing materials that you may be tempted to toss,” said Teresa Chandler, Community Relations of Waste Management.
Some examples of eco-friendly holiday décor are: wreaths made of wine corks, bulb ornaments, pine cones, colorful tissue and wrapping papers, table centerpieces made from holly, branches or old ornaments, origami decorations made out of scrap paper, Christmas cards, and past years’ wrapping paper.
“We can all save money and time and reduce our impact on the environment by looking for more creative, sustainable decoration options. If each of us tried a few waste reduction efforts, such as simply buying products made from organic or recycled content, we would see a significant, positive impact during the holiday season,” Chandler added.
Chandler explained Waste Management employees across North America already have begun sharing their green inspired art work internally through the company’s intranet and that those items will be shared via social media, too.
