Homeless intoxicated man tries to enter burning home

GIFFORD — As Indian River County Fire Rescue fought a house fire, they also had to deal with Jerome Johnson, 57, who was shouting obscenities and was intoxicated, trying to enter the burning home, according to the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.

Sunday morning, around 3:40 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call from Fire Cpt. Ron Angelo, according to authorities. Johnson was still on the scene shouting obscenities to random people. As law enforcement spoke to him, Johnson told them to “(expletive) off.” He then began to stumble around and shout more inaudible statements.

The owner of the home that was on fire said Johnson was cursing at her and tried to enter her home, which was destroyed by the fire, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Johnson faces a charge of disorderly intoxication and has been released on $500 bond.
