FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Police Department has issued a warning for the city’s residents after receiving a complaint from a caller about a possible scam.
The police received a call from a resident Wednesday afternoon regarding a phone call she had from an unknown male representing himself as someone from “Program Energy.”
According to the police department, the man tried to pressure the woman into scheduling a $49 inspection of her heating and air conditioning unit. The caller told the woman the city had recently passed a law requiring all residents to have inspections done “due to fire hazards from the dryer unit.”
The woman told police she was suspicious of the caller because she believed the City of Fellsmere would have put a notification in her monthly water bill. When the woman told the caller she was going to call the city to verify the supposed change of law, the man became even more aggressive in trying to get the woman to schedule an inspection.
“The City of Fellsmere has not enacted any new ordinances or resolutions requiring mandatory inspections,” Chief Keith Touchberry said in the release.
He recommends any resident contacted by anyone for such an inspection, whether on the telephone or in person report the incident to the Fellsmere Police Department at (772) 571-1360.
