SEBASTIAN — Last week, volunteers from Sebastian’s no-kill animal rescue, HALO, made the drive to Clayton County, Ga., to rescue 19 dogs from certain death at the Animal Control facility there. Now, HALO is seeking forever homes for those dogs.
Seventy-five animals had been marked for euthanasia at the center, according to HALO founder Jacque Petrone. With HALO’s quick rescue – the entire journey took 24 hours – the dogs were granted a stay of execution, at least, until more animals are brought in and the facility is again over capacity.
The rescued dogs include Labrador-mixes, Collie-mixes, a Border Collie, a Husky, and several small Terriers.
“They’re strays or owner-surrenders,” Petrone said.
They all have some medical condition that requires treatment and all are currently undergoing that treatment. Many have kennel cough and worms, according to Petrone.
“We need to start the healing process,” she said.
To that end, HALO is seeking not just loving homes for the dogs but also sponsorships and donations to help underwrite the medical bills.
“I’m not even thinking about it,” Petrone said when asked what she expects the final medical bill to be for the 19 dogs.
One medication alone for each of the 19 dogs costs $100 – and many need multiple medications.
Those who would like to help are encouraged to contact HALO by calling (772) 589-7297 or stopping by the shelter, located at 710 Jackson St., Sebastian. For more information about HALO, visit www.HALORescueFL.org.
