Saint Edward’s School announces fall choral concert

VERO BEACH — Saint Edward’s School is proud to announce its upcoming fall choral concert entitled “Sing with the Spirit.” The event is open to the public and will be held in the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

The concert will feature many favorite African-American spirituals and southern American folk songs.

Newly appointed choral director Jack Templeton is especially excited to bring this catalog of songs to our community audience.

“This unique, folk genre began as slaves created their own music to express their affliction, and it has evolved into sophisticated choral arrangements for the concert hall.

My students have a wonderful opportunity to share this emotional message of hope that resonates throughout history, and they’ve worked hard to capture the inspiration behind the music,” Templeton explained.

Throughout the lively program, the choirs will collaborate with three Vero Beach-based professional musicians: jazz pianist Jacob Craig, percussionist Brandon Putzke, and Saint Edward’s School’s own bass player Pete Hengen.

“It’s always a joy to have the opportunity to work with kids and share our musical gifts, but when the evening includes spiritual and folk music that has shaped entire cultures, it becomes even more memorable,” Putzke added.

The performance features students from both the Middle and Upper Schools, many exciting solos, and several a capella numbers.

Class of 2014 Pirates Sean Barry and Nicolette Puskar will be performing the solos for “Ain’t Got Time to Die” and “Ride the Chariot,” respectively. Both pieces are a perfect fit for the seniors, who are working diligently to fine tune their performances in these last days of rehearsals.

“This performance will appeal to a wide variety of people, from history buffs to children who can’t resist a little toe-tapping when the beat is just right. It’s the perfect entertainment to enjoy before the rush of the holiday season,” said Templeton.

All ages are welcome, and the performance is free of charge.
