UPDATE: Teen hit in Vero Lake Estates later dies at SRMC identified

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 17-year-old was struck by a car Thursday evening around 8:15 p.m. in Vero Lake Estates, according to authorities.

The driver, Ashleigh Bates, 27, of Sebastian, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu westbound on 83rd Street in the community. The pedestrian, identified as Gennifer Dean, of Fellsmere, was traveling westbound, as well.

Bates attempted to take evasive action to the left but the right of her vehicle struck Dean, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Dean was thrown onto the hood and ejected off the vehicle onto the north shoulder.

The crash happened at 83rd Street and 97th Avenue. The victim was transported to Sebastian River Medical Center where she died.

People who knew about the incident are raising their concerns on facebook regarding the lack of sidewalks and street lights in the community.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to FHP. No charges have been filed.
