VERO BEACH — the Vero Beach City Council agreed Tuesday night to place an ordinance on a future agenda that would allow community gardens in residential neighborhoods.
“It was unanimously recommended for approval by the Planning and Zoning Board,” Planning Director Tim McGarry said.
High School student Will Tremml constructed a community garden on a Central Beach lot owned by his family and it was not a permitted use in his neighborhood. The proposed ordinance would allow community gardens on vacant lots as a temporary use.
Councilwoman Pilar Turner called the garden and the produce it provides to homeless families “a wonderful, wonderful gift.”
McGarry praised Tremml for his knowledge of the ordinance when he approached the council a few weeks ago asking for his garden and gardens like his to be allowed.
