VERO BEACH — A Vero Beach man has been arrested for shoplifting using a purse to conceal a health product and meat, according to the Vero Beach Police Department.
Robert Dougherty, 63, of Vero Beach, was arrested at the Publix on 21st Street in Vero Beach and faces charges of shoplifting, according to police. Dougherty was being monitored because a manager had suspected him of stealing before.
Dougherty was observed walking the aisles carrying two items, according to authorities. He was seen putting the items into his purse. When confronted Dougherty dumped the items into another individual’s cart.
When brought to the front office to be questioned if he had any other items concealed, Dougherty pulled roast beef out of his purse, according to police. The Rogaine was valued at $28.49 and the lunch meat at $7.70. The manager requested that he stay, but the suspect left the store.
Officers later picked him up at his home in the 900 block of Pirate Cove Lane, Vero Beach, according to authorities. Dougherty told police that he was not feeling well and did not realize what he did.
Dougherty faces charges of retail theft and has been released on $500 bond.
