Saint Edward’s Pirates entertain with a twist

VERO BEACH — Saint Edward’s School theatre department head Maggie Baker announced today its fall Upper School Theatre production of You Can’t Take It with You will be performed on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Waxlax Center.

“This play is one of the funniest theatrical productions ever written. For over 70 years, this classic of the American Theatre has made thousands of audiences howl with laughter as they meet and fall in love with the wonderfully eccentric Sycamore/Vanderhof family.

The production is full of unexpected moments, but we’re especially thrilled to include some surprises of our own,” Baker explained.

The Saint Edward’s theatre department is teaming up with the local Humane Society and adding two furry little thespians that will be available for adoption following the weekend. The script calls for pet kittens that will star alongside the human actors in the play.

“We’re excited to join Saint Edward’s in this creative and loving plan to highlight two of our kittens who are available for adoption. Interested families will go through our detailed vetting process after the play closes,” added Ilke Daniel, Director of Animal Protective Services at the Humane Society.

The kittens, whose stage names are Groucho and Harpo, join Alice Sycamore, who struggles through the antics of her mortifyingly, embarrassing family while wooing her fiancé’s uptight parents. Her family home buzzes with everything from fireworks in the basement to clumsy but well-intentioned ballerinas, with a little government anarchy thrown into the mix.

The cast of 8th-12th graders includes the talents of Daniel Jutras as Grandpa Martin Vanderhof, Natie Deibeas as his daughter Penny Sycamore, Conor O’Haire as Penny’s husband Paul, Amber Quinlan as daughter Alice Sycamore, Cassidy Layton as daughter Essie Carmichael, Andreea Scridon as Essie’s Russian dance teacher Boris Kolenkov, Doreen Qin as housekeeper Rheba, Danielle Dobson as the quirky Mr. De Pinna, Jake Corvino as Alice’s love interest Tony Kirby, and Jonathan Buckley and Ashley Intihar as Tony’s parents.

Rounding out the cast are Alyson Intihar, Gabriella Mowery, Birna Herdisardottir, Alie Miller, and Lili Song.

More than a simple laugh riot, You Can’t Take It with You is a heartwarming play with a timeless message of “Stay true to yourself.”

The production takes place in the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts on Saint Edward’s School Campus.

Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.
