SELF welcomes capstone students

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF) is pleased to welcome two capstone students from Indian River State College (IRSC) who recently started with the nonprofit organization last week.

Lacy Thomas and Cindy Sims are both completing their Bachelors of Applied Science Degree in Organizational Management at IRSC and will be assisting SELF with a variety of marketing initiatives during the fall 2013 semester.

Their work will include target market research, community outreach, social networking, and local neighborhood initiatives to increase community awareness on energy conservation and renewable energy technologies.

Both students have displayed excitement and passion in working with SELF.

“I hope to gain extensive knowledge about energy efficiencies while working with management to implement these initiatives and practices in my community,” said Lacy Thomas, a capstone student.

The SELF program specifically includes ways to help homeowners identify the most cost effective improvements that can be made to their homes, as well as providing favorable financing to enable them to invest in energy retrofits and rooftop solar products.

Cindy Sims, a student and mother, hopes that she can pass the information that she learns from SELF to her children.

“Educating future generations about the need to change our behaviors and energy consumption patterns is necessary,” Cindy explained.

As such, Cindy is most excited about developing community outreach programs that focus on educating residents about the benefits of energy efficiency and clean energy alternatives.

Victoria Stalls, an Adjunct Professor with Indian River State College, is extremely thrilled to see the partnership between SELF and the capstone class continue.

“It is great to see our students directly improving the local community by applying their skills to organizations like SELF. I look forward to the great work produced from this partnership,” added Ms. Stalls.
