Camp Chrysalis helps children cope with loss of loved one

VERO BEACH — Do you know a child who has experienced the loss of a loved one? Then sign them up for Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice’s Camp Chrysalis, a one day bereavement retreat for children who have experienced a loss.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at LaPorte Farms, 7700 129th St. in Sebastian. Arts and crafts, pony and hay rides, face painting, and other outside adventures are just a few of the fun activities planned for the day.

The camp is staffed by VNA bereavement counselors, volunteers, and activity leaders who are trained in bereavement support. Special camp activities are designed to help children work through their grief and understand that their emotions are a normal part of the grieving process.

Campers have an opportunity to interact with peers who have experienced a similar loss and discover they are not alone.

Camp Chrysalis is free of charge for Indian River County children ages 7—12 and is not limited to those who have been served by VNA Hospice.

The event is made possible by the Clint S. Malone Memorial fund through the Indian River Community Foundation and Quail Valley Charities, Inc.

Application deadline is Oct. 11.
